Homestead exemption
The Homestead Exemption is a real estate tax-reduction benefit to permanent Maine residents who have owned their property as their primary residence for at least 12 months. The exemption reduces the assessed value of the residence, resulting in lower property taxes than what would have been without the exemption. Once you are approved for the exemption, the benefit continues for each subsequent year. You do not have to file every year.
